South Africa’s Solar Shift: What 2025 Is Teaching Us

B𝘆 Fibon head of engineering, Awie Bosman:

If you’ve been in the renewables game as long as I have, you know real change doesn’t happen overnight. But 2025 feels different. This year, we’re not just reacting to problems we’re designing around long-term resilience. Across rooftops, agri-sites, commercial nodes and even municipalities, the shift to solar is becoming strategic.

Here are a few key movements I’m watching closely. Some we’re actively delivering at Fibon; others we’re building toward, one smart step at a time.

Rooftop Solar Is Getting Smarter

We’ve come a long way from basic panel installs. Today’s systems integrate AI and machine learning to adapt when loadshedding reappears automatically shifting from cost savings to backup power. Battery-hybrid solutions are on the rise, and more clients are asking, “Can I rely on this when the grid lets me down?” That’s the right question.
Soos ons sê: “As jy vir krag bou, bou dit reg.”

Dispatchable Solar? It’s Happening

One of South Africa’s best examples is the Oya Hybrid project a mix of solar, wind and battery storage, designed to dispatch power on demand.
Why does this matter? Because the more consistency we can guarantee, the more confidence businesses and funders have in renewables. That’s good for everyone.

Policy Is Starting to Catch Up
The Climate Change Act of 2024 marks a significant shift. It requires municipalities and large emitters to plan for (and respond to) climate risk more formally.
Will it solve grid challenges overnight? No. But it’s a step in the right direction, creating greater certainty for private-sector investors.

Energy Wheeling: One to Watch
Wheeling: the ability to generate power off-site and use it elsewhere via the grid is a game-changer, especially for national brands with multiple locations. While it isn’t yet widespread or seamless in South Africa, we’re laying the groundwork: carefully, intentionally, and in partnership with legal and regulatory experts.

International Eyes Are on South Africa
The recent €200 million investment from the EU and DBSA into local renewable projects speaks volumes. It shows belief not only in the technology, but in the people and partnerships behind each project. As engineers and delivery partners, we carry real responsibility.

Eskom Hikes Keep Pushing the Case
With NERSA’s latest tariff increase of 12.7 percent for 2025 and 2026 the math keeps tilting in solar’s favour. On the ground, clients are becoming more strategic: asking better questions, seeking structured finance, and demanding real accountability on output.

That’s where delivery partners must step up. 2025 is proving that South Africa is ready for a new kind of energy leadership one that’s collaborative, technically sound and rooted in real-world reliability. We’re not here to oversell; we’re here to build what works, partner where it matters and prepare for what’s next.

Laat ons aanhou bou — dis nie net oor vandag nie, maar oor wat ons vir môre regkry.
